I always believe that dogs are man's best-friend and if ever they have bad attitude like chasing the neighbor that is really a slap on the face because it means we are not a good owner. Anyway, the cage is not always for punishment it is also for protection. I wrote about just the same things you are talking about here. Crate training is the ONLY way that I potty train dogs, as this is the best way, in my opinion. Also, when you need to travel with your dog, it will be so much easier if he easily and willingly goes into his crate. You say you don't travel with your dog? What about taking him to the vet? Make it easy on yourself, and on your dog.
